SOFIA MOLLBERG

Born 1992

"My background as a fashion designer has led me further into the world of the visual arts. I use drawing to explore my artistic language, and as a sketching technique for realising larger projects. In my current work, I explore the complexity of the human experience, focusing on narrative and the intertwined relationships between life forms and the self.

For me, drawing is a way of communicating ideas and a constant starting point for developing my artistic practice. In drawing, ideas are realised and a reaction occurs in the mind when it takes shape on paper – which opens up new perspectives, awakens visions and heightens intuition. It is through the drawing that I begin to approach my truth and my method of communicating."

Master’s degree specialising in fashion design, 2020, The Swedish School of Textiles, Borås

THE SELECTION COMMITTEE'S MOTIVATION:
Sofia Mollberg combines collage and drawing in a visual world that has its own logic. People and vegetation are linked via root systems that create new and unexpected synapses. An elegant, contrast-filled web emerges, in which loops of graphite are linked to precise, sharp images of flora and artefacts.
