The French marshal Jean Baptiste Bernadotte was elected successor to the Swedish throne at the Parliamentary Session in Örebro in 1810. With his military experience, Sweden hoped to reconquer Finland. However, a union was concluded between Sweden and Norway instead.

Desideria became Queen of Sweden and Norway. She disliked the cold Swedish climate, and soon returned to Paris. It was not until her son Oskar was to due to be married that she returned to Sweden, where she stayed.
